About LinkBuildingStat: link data for people who count

We run a link data API for backlinks and a free online explorer. The writing on this site follows one habit: every figure gets a date, a sample and a note on what it cannot show.

What we built

A REST API that returns JSON. It covers backlinks, referring domains, anchor text, top pages and a 0-100 Domain Rating for any domain.

The data comes from our own crawler and our own link index: 181,132,097 domains, 2,774,625,913 domain-to-domain links and about 798.5 billion backlinks. The index refreshes roughly once a month, which means a link from last week may not be there yet.

The free explorer and the free actions, domain, overview, stats and suggest, exist so you can test the data before you pay for anything.

How we like to write

Cautiously. A statistic without a sample is an anecdote, and we try not to publish those. Every worked example on the site is marked as invented, and none of them is a customer story.

Our pages cover benchmarking, alternatives to other vendors' APIs, and reading link statistics without being fooled by averages.

Who reads us

People who want to count. A founder checking whether 140 referring domains is ordinary for her niche, an analyst building a monthly sheet, a developer wiring a lookup into a report.

Many of them also own Ahrefs or Semrush, and some are weighing a Semrush API alternative for the link-only part of their work. Others are leaving Majestic and wondering what changes.

We would rather lose a sale than see a reader misuse a number. Hence the labels on the examples.

What a month looks like here

Quiet, mostly. The index refreshes, the free tools keep answering, and we publish only when a page has something checkable to say.

We follow Google's real updates, such as the March 2024 core update and the June 2025 core update, because they are the dates that tempt people into false stories. A link count and an update date side by side prove nothing alone, so we say that out loud.

If you spot a claim on this site that lacks a date or a sample, treat it as a bug and tell us through the account page.

Our promises, kept small

We promise a dated number. We do not promise rankings, traffic or a particular score, and no page here should be read as one.

If a figure on a worked example looks suspiciously tidy, that is because we invented it for the sake of the arithmetic, and the page says so.

How the index gets made

We crawl the web ourselves. No third-party feed sits underneath, and we do not name outside data sources because there are none to name.

The crawl produces a graph of domains and the links between them. From that graph we derive referring domains, anchor text, top pages and the DR score, which is round(100 x log(ref_domains+1) / log(2x10^7)) and therefore depends on one input only.

That simplicity is deliberate. A score you can recompute by hand is a score you can check, and a statistician would rather trust a formula on a page than a black box with a nicer name.

What we are not

A link-data tool, not a suite

No keyword research, no rank tracking, no daily-fresh crawl. For those, Ahrefs and Semrush are the fuller products, and we say so on purpose.
