Ahrefs API alternative: cost per benchmark, worked through

Pricing models differ in kind, so a single price per call hides more than it shows. Here is a careful comparison, with the assumptions written where you can argue with them.

The comparison in brief

They sell different things at different grains

Ahrefs sells API units inside subscriptions, from $129 a month for 200,000 units, with at least 50 units per request. We sell prepaid credits at $0.0001 each, with no subscription and no minimum.

  • Ahrefs is the fuller product for keywords, rank tracking and a daily-fresh crawl
  • We are about link data at a low per-call price
  • A price comparison is only fair for the same question asked of both

A worked example, clearly hypothetical

Take an invented consultant who benchmarks 30 client sites each month. For each, she wants a profile size, a comparison with nine rivals, and the top referring domains.

Against our API that is one free overview, one compare at 1 credit, and one refdomains at 2 credits: 3 credits per client, so 90 credits a month, which is $0.009. The $100 sign-up credit would cover that for longer than anyone should keep a spreadsheet.

Against an Ahrefs plan, the stated minimum is 50 units per request. Easy to miss. A month of 200,000 units allows at most 4,000 requests. Her 30 clients need perhaps 90 requests, so most of the allowance goes unused, which is fine if she also uses the suite for keywords. It is a poor reason to buy the plan only for this.

The same sums, laid out

Hypothetical workload: 30 clients, 3 requests each. Prices are from the research notes on each side.

Where the comparison breaks

Price per call ignores quality. If the freshness of last Tuesday's link matters to your client, a monthly refresh is a real limit, and no discount repairs it.

Try it yourself. Our benchmark recipe shows the three calls behind these sums. Other search terms in this space, such as semrush api alternatives or ahrefs api competitor, usually mean the same worry: paying a suite price for a single link question. That worry is fair, but the answer changes with volume, and at tens of thousands of lookups a month the arithmetic can reverse.

Three honest caveats

Our figures are lower on freshness. A daily-fresh crawl will show a link in days where our monthly refresh may take weeks, and a price table cannot fix that.

The credit arithmetic also assumes a modest workload. If you run, say, 40,000 two-credit calls a month, the bill is still only $8, yet at that scale you should test coverage on your own domains first, not trust a table.

Finally, a benchmark is only as good as its sample. Cheap calls make it tempting to pull everything and choose later, which is the exact habit the recipe is designed to stop.

How to run your own cost check

01

Count last month's real lookups

Not the ones you imagined. Open your logs or invoices and write the number.

02

Classify each by action

Free overview, 1-credit compare, 2-credit refdomains. Multiply by price.

03

Add what you use the suite for

If keywords and tracking justify the plan anyway, link calls are almost free either way.
